Home and light recommendations

For the first year to two depending on growth a 40-75 gallon will fit comfortably. A bedding of zoomed forest floor and reptibark mixed together is very nice to have for them. It allows for several benefits not limited to creating some micro climates around some moisture, and to help control beak growth, and is a wonderful bedding to allow for practice burrowing.

We like to use zoomed power sun bulbs for heat and UV combinations. Depending on the height of the tank we prefer to use the 80-100 watt. If only UV is needed then we use reptisun 10.0 UVB bulbs. Being grasslands tortoises they can get lots of direct sun, but they are known to go into their burrows during the peak heat of the day primarily active in the morning and after noon and early afternoon heat. The sulcatas like a basking spot of roughly 80-88 degrees Fahrenheit and no warmer than 90. The cool side of the tank should be 70s.

For a water dish sulcatas normally prefer to sit in water completely surrounded. In the wild they will run to puddles in the rain to hydrate and flush their systems through. So we love to use pot holder dishes which are shallow and can allow for the hatchlings to walk in and out easily. We use big enough dishes that a few can stay in there and drink and poop completely without having to sit face in their own waste. Also this being a normal practice for them we have to change the dishes water and wash them daily. In addition to the big enough dishes in the tank to soak in we also soak the babies in a big tub outside twice a week letting them get natural sun too.
